School Watch

To all School Watch volunteers

Firstly, we are enormously grateful to you for your interest and for volunteering - without your help it would be much more difficult to keep the school grounds open for community use.  We are confident that this programme will play a vital role in deterring troublemakers from damaging our school.

We will have the School Watch programme up and running early next term.   As some of you were not able to make it to the presentation, this is a summary of the basics:

- Patrols will occur  on Friday nights and at weekends at this stage, both during school term and school holidays.   Exact timeframes to be discussed
- Each patrol will be a minimum of 2-3 people; never a person alone
- There are no firm rules about times, but we would aim for a minimum of 2 patrols per session
- If you see anything untoward you are not to intervene; our job is simply to report to the Security Dept (numbers in attached word document) and they will decide how to respond
- School Watch ID badges must be worn when patrolling

If you would like to volunteer please contact Ros on rosvanextel@hotmail.com

Other updates:

Lighting
- we will be discussing what lighting will work best in the school grounds.   Some lighting is needed for the patrols, too much lighting may create an attractive site for troublemakers.   The images from the CCTV cameras are best when there is some light so we will be taking account of all these factors when working out the best combination.   We will, of course, also be considering the effect lighting has on the school's neighbours

Other Security measures - CCTV cameras (which are being installed next week) and some additional fencing along the Medusa St and Purcell Avenue boundaries are also expected to make a positive difference.

Publicity - we will be in touch with the Mosman Daily and will hang new signs around the school

Police - we are liaising with local police to inform them of this initiative

Roseville School - this school has run a successful School Watch programme for several years.  We have already been in touch and we will continue to seek tips from them to ensure our programme runs as smoothly as possible

Thank you again for volunteering

CONTACT NUMBERS FOR SECURITY ISSUES

If you become aware of any untoward behaviour at the school, the DET Safety and Security Unit advise calling one of the following 3 numbers, depending upon the nature of the incident:

000 for Emergencies
Fires, persons on (inside) premises and severe injuries

1300 880 021
(School Security Unit)
For Schoolwatch concerns such as unauthorised people on site, damage found, unlocked and/or open/unlocked windows and doors.
This will be the number used most often and is manned by DEC staff 24 hours a day seven (7) days a week at the DEC’s Control Room

1300 363 778
(Safety & Response Unit)
For reporting incidents of threats, actual and potential harm to persons on site.
This number is less likely to be needed, if at all. Again this number is answered by DEC staff or seconded police officers at the Safely and Security Directorate. After hours this number is diverted to a staff member rostered for those duties.
